CAPT Shelby Mounts

Captain Shelby Mounts earned a Bachelor of Science from the United States Naval Academy and was commissioned in May 1992. He has also earned a Master of Science from the University of San Diego Business School, is a Joint Qualified Officer, and completed the Secretary of Defense Corporate Fellows Program (SDCFP). 

Shelby’s early career consisted of Surface Warfare Division Officer assignments aboard USS JESSE L BROWN (FF-1089) in Mobile, AL and USS NASSAU (LHA-4) in Norfolk, VA with deployments to the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas. He was selected for community transition to Navy Pilot and ultimately winged as a Helicopter Combat Support (HC) pilot in August 1997.

His aviation career included successful operational and instructor assignments progressing from Division Officer through Command. West coast tours in HC-11 and HC-3 flying the H-46D and HC-5/HSC-25 flying the MH-60S included three amphibious SAR deployments on USS BOXER (LHD-4), USS TARAWA (LHA-1), and USS ESSEX (LHD-2). Shelby successfully completed a tour as Commanding Officer of HSC-2 in Norfolk, Va in 2011. 

Staff assignments include a joint billet at US Special Operations Command (US SOCOM) in Tampa, FL and two assignments to the Navy Staff at the Pentagon. While at SOCOM Shelby performed the duties of Staff Plans Officer in the J-8 and volunteered to deploy to CJSOTF-Afghanistan as the J-35 Air Operations Officer in 2007. His post-Command Pentagon tour included assignments as the H-60 Requirements Officer and Executive Assistant for the Director, Air Warfare (OPNAV N98). While at the Pentagon he was selected for Captain as well as the SDCFP with subsequent assignment for a year with Shell Oil Company in New Orleans, La. Following the fellowship he returned to the Navy Staff as Special Projects Officer advising the Director, Operations and Plans (OPNAV N31).

His personal decorations include Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with one gold star, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with one gold star, and numerous unit and campaign medals and ribbons.
